Orchestra, Contemporary
Jaap van Zweden and the Concertgebouw Orchestra celebrate their long association with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. Van Zweden, once the concertmaster of this orchestra, is celebrated worldwide for his inspired approach to existing and new repertoire. And that certainly comes in handy when approaching Tchaikovsky’s most narrative symphony, the Fourth. Although Tchaikovsky often played his cards close to his chest, in this piece, he was open about exactly what he hoped to express: the whims of fate, melancholy, intoxication, and finally, the joys of life.
Antoine Tamestit is one of those rare violists with a successful career as a soloist. He will make his highly anticipated debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Viola Concerto by Sofia Gubaidulina, the living legend of Russian music. The composer added a string quartet – in a different tuning – to the orchestral accompaniment of this impressive work, thereby creating a wondrous soundscape.
