About the concert

It has become a beautiful tradition: twice a year, masterpianist Nicolas van Poucke shines in the Recital Hall of The Concertgebouw. Last October he enchanted the audience with works by Debussy, Mozart, Ravel and Franck. Today he returns with a magnificent program that focuses on Handel, Beethoven, and a very special composer, with whom Van Poucke has a deep resonating bond: Robert Schumann. The program includes Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze, one of his most intimate and personal works.

Davidsbündlertänze

Schumann's alter egos, Eusebius and Florestan, are well known and represent his dreamy, thoughtful side (Eusebius) and his impulsive, fiery side (Florestan). These characters are part of an imaginary group of friends, the Davidsbund, that Schumann had created in his head. In the Davidsbündlertänze these alter egos conduct a lively dialogue, in which the contrasts between them are beautifully expressed. So important were these characters to Schumann that he even attributed the composition to them; Schumann's own name does not appear anywhere on the title page of the first edition of the Davidsbündlertänze.

Van Poucke and Schumann

Nicolas van Poucke has been working on his project The Schumann Collection for some time, of which two albums have now been released. The second volume also includes the Davidsbündlertänze. His interpretations of Schumann have been extensively praised by the national and international press. NRC Handelsblad wrote: 'Van Poucke masterfully brought the characters and stories sketched Schumann to life'. Het Parool noted: 'There are not many pianists who know how to approach this musically and psychologically complex world with such naturalness'. In short, a recital to look forward to!
