Fazıl Say: ‘Ik probeer een brug te slaan tussen het Westen en de Turkse cultuur’

The Concertgebouw is pleased to announces its 2023-2024 in-house programming. Spotlighted are Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say and the string orchestra Amsterdam Sinfonietta. And as always, we welcome back top international orchestras such as the Filarmonica della Scala with Riccardo Chailly and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra with Andris Nelsons. Dutch violinist Janine Jansen will present her own Bach Festival. And this year’s Great Pianists series will shine its light on Beethoven.

Fazıl Say: ‘I try to build a bridge between the West and Turkish culture'

Ankara-born pianist and composer Fazıl Say navigates between the Turkish world and the West: ‘I try to build a bridge between different cultures; that’s the sound I’m going for in Amsterdam. There are many Turkish elements in my music: the way I use rhythm and melody, the inspiration I take from people and cities.’ Turkish singer Serenad Bağcan, cellist Jamal Aliyev and the Goldmund Quartet are mong the talented performers Fazıl Say has enlisted for his series. The Dutch pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen will play a piano concerto specially composed for the brothers by him. The spotlight series curated by Fazıl Say’s consists of seven concerts.

World-renowned symphony orchestras and soloists

The World Famous Symphony Orchestras series has always been one of the Concertgebouw’s most popular offerings: the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Oslo Philharmonic, Philharmonia Wien and the Vienna Symphoniker will perform for Amsterdam audiences this coming season. The Concertgebouw also welcomes back a selection of the world’s top soloists: Maria João Pires, Cecilia Bartoli, Joyce DiDonato, Leonidas Kavakos, Lang Lang. Violinist Liza Ferschtman celebrates her quarter-century on stage with a special concert. Conductor Riccardo Chailly opens the season with a festive Verdi programme performed by the orchestra and choir of La Scala in Milan, where he is now musical director.

Great Pianists series focuses on Beethoven

Beethoven is the underlying thread of this season’s Great Pianists series: Fazıl Say, Emanuel Ax, Hélène Grimaud, Mitsuko Uchida, Ronald Brautigam and Jonathan Fournel will all perform pieces from the composer’s hand. Argentina’s top pianist Nelson Goerner will present a programme of Schumann and Rachmaninoff. Evgeny Kissin, Maria João Pires and Grigory Sokolov are keeping their programmes under wraps for now.

Recital Hall: from Haydn to Composer in Residence Ellen Reid

The Recital Hall’s programming ranges from Haydn, the father of the string quartet, to our new Composer in Residence Ellen Reid. ‘I feel very honoured, and I’m truly looking forward to being inspired by spending time in Amsterdam,’ said the composer, who will also create a piece for the National Opera and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. New to our in-house programming is the Guitar Masters’ series, which this season features Zoran Dukić, Berta Rojas and Raphaël Feuillâtre. Showcased in the vocal series are debutants such as Ilker Arcayürek and Jeanine De Bique. Included among those returning to the Recital Hall are Florian Boesch, Sabine Devieilhe and Sarah Connolly.

Sunday Morning Concert: Noa Wildschut, Pretty Yende and many others

As part of The Sunday Morning Concert, the Concertgebouw presents ‒ together with TV and radio broadcaster AVROTROS ‒ one of the best listened to and attended concert series in the Netherlands. The combination of accessible classical music presented by Hans van den Boom is a must on Sunday mornings for NPO Klassiek listeners and concertgoers. This season’s schedule includes violinist Noa Wildschut, soprano Pretty Yende and the Choir of St John’s College.

Upcoming concerts can be ordered as a series starting 28 March at 10 am and as individual concerts from 1 June. This season, for the first time, concertgoers purchasing a series will receive a discount of up to 20% compared to the single ticket price.

In mijn muziek zitten vele Turkse elementen, de manier waarop ik ritme en melodie inzet, de inspiratie die ik uit mensen en steden haal.’ Hij neemt voor zijn serie onder anderen de Turkse zangeres Serenad Bağcan, cellist Jamal Aliyev en het het Goldmund Quartett mee. De Nederlandse pianisten Lucas en Arthur Jussen spelen een pianoconcert dat hij speciaal voor de broers schreef. De spotlight-serie van Fazıl Say omvat zeven concerten.
