The Concertgebouw presents 2022 concert season with Isata Kanneh-Mason, Joyce DiDonato and Krystian Zimerman

The Concertgebouw announces its in-house programming for the upcoming 2022 season: 112 concerts with full audience attendance in the Main and Recital Hall. Included in the new series Great Pianists are recitals by the star pianist Yuja Wang and grandmaster Grigory Sokolov, just to mention a few. After two years of Covid restrictions, the St Matthew Passion will once again be performed in front of a full house. Rising star Isata Kanneh-Mason graces the cover of the brochure and will play in both the Main and Recital Hall. Ticket sales for this January to June concert series begin on Tuesday 7 September at 10 am via the Concertgebouw’s website and box office; single tickets can be purchased from Tuesday 5 October.

Great Soloists and New World Stars

In the Great Soloists series, the Concertgebouw presents Janine Jansen in duet with the Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin. They will play a repetiore of Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and the Il Pomo d'Oro orchestra will perform EDEN, an ode to the power of nature, with music from Händel to Mahler. In New World Stars the audience will hear young musicians who are conquering international stages. The French Alexandre Kantorow has been called the ‘Tsar of the piano'. Accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra, he will be soloing in Saint-Saëns’ virtuoso Second Piano Concerto. The British Isata Kanneh-Mason will play Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto in G Minor with the Paris Mozart Orchestra.

Great Pianists

The Concertgebouw will present piano recitals in the Main Hall as part of the new series Great Pianists. Pierre-Laurent Aimard, the celebrated ambassador of Messiaen, will play his Vingt regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus. The Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson will perform a selection of work including compositions by Mozart. The virtuoso Yuja Wang and grandmaster Grigory Sokolov return to the Main Hall with brand new programmes. Then it’s the turn of Lucas and Arthur Jussen. The brothers will play Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps in the four-handed piano version. Fazıl Say combines his own work with that of Händel, Beethoven and Schubert. Master pianist Krystian Zimerman completes the series.

Jazz, Soul and Fado

As usual, the Concertgebouw hosts more than just classical music. Mariza, the grande dame of fado, returns with a programme full of fado and soul. The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, one of the best big bands in the US, will present a jazz power-programme. The Irish folk band Clannad will visit Amsterdam for the last time during their farewell tour. And early in January, the much-loved Dhafer Youssef will appear in Amsterdam with his band. Youth friends Avishai Cohen & Yonathan Avishai complete the line-up with their programme Playing The Room. Tickets for all pop and jazz concerts are already on sale.

Tradition and Innovation

After two years, the St Matthew Passion will again be performed in front of a full house. Tenor Mark Padmore will lead the orchestra as well as sing in the St John Passion. For many Dutch people, listening to the Sunday Morning Concert has become something of a tradition. In 2022, this popular and accessible classical music series returns to Radio 4 every Sunday. Innovation is also part of our new season: concepts like Spraakmakers (Movers & Shakers) feature the Dutch writer Ramsey Nasr sharing a stage with the Calefax Reed Quintet. As well as Piano Nights, a relaxed evening in which two pianists surprise the audience with a mixture of music past and present.

Rising Stars, Europe's Finest

One of the most popular concert series in the Recital Hall is Rising Stars. Audiences get to hear the finest talent Europe has to offfer, selected by major European concert venues. This year’s series also includes: the British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason and the Spanish Kebyart Ensemble performing Stravinsky, Mendelssohn and more – all on saxophone. The impassioned violinist Johan Dalene will be accompanied by pianist Nicola Eimer. Recorder player Lucie Horsch is the Dutch selection. Performing with lutenist Thomas Dunford, she takes the audience on a journey through time.
