The Royal Concertgebouw presents a new programme of 116 concerts

10 May 2021 – Announcing the Royal Concertgebouw’s summer and autumn programming: 116 performances planned as one-and-a-half-metre concerts. Two one-hour editions – no intermission –with 425 guests in the Main Hall or 115 in the Recital Hall. Included among the highlights of the programme are appearances by major soloists: violinist Janine Jansen, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and pianist Maria João Pires. Chilly Gonzales, an audience favourite, will also return for a solo concert in the Main Hall. Looking ahead, Managing Director Simon Reinink: ‘The musicians and our staff are eager to welcome back the public.’

BankGiro Lottery Summer Concert

The Royal Concertgebouw presents the BankGiro Lottery Summer Concerts 2021, with a selection of top national and international artist. Thirty-five twice-nightly concerts, in one-and-a-half metre format, are scheduled for July and August. From classical stars Yuja Wang and Renée Fleming to popular bands Altin Gün and Her Majesty. Our regulars including the pianist brothers Arthur and Lucas Jussen, violinist Noa Wildschut and pianist Hannes Minnaar will join us again this summer. Young musicians are once again represented: the Jeugdorkest Nederland, the Nationaal Jeugdorkest and Concertgebouw orchestra Young will also perform.

Audience Favourites: Janine Jansen & Wynton Marsalis

On 14 September Janine Jansen and Amsterdam Sinfonietta will usher in the autumn with Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. Dutch orchestras will perform classical masterpieces, in keeping with tradition and for the first time in this series, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra led by chief conductor Elim Chan will play a concert. After a long hiatus, world-renowned orchestras and soloists will grace our stages again: including the Munich Philharmonic with chief conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Igor Levit, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra with baritone Christian Gerhaher, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, and the Dutch Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century.

Pianists in the Main Hall: Maria João Pires, Thomas Beijer and Chilly Gonzales

Starting this season the Concertgebouw’s in-house programming will include a series of Master Pianists in the Main Hall: a succession of piano recitals featuring world-famous pianists and up-and-coming talent. Denis Matsuev, Igor Levit and Maria João Pires will perform this fall. Daniel Ciobanu and Marie-Ange Nguci will also appear in the Master Pianists series in the Recital Hall. In October the Concertgebouw will offer the new series Piano Nights featuring a double-bill first concert: Iris Hond and Thomas Beijer. The series will wrap up with the popular pianist Chilly Gonzales playing his piece Solo Piano.

The Recital Hall

As always, the Concertgebouw welcomes the best of the chamber music world to the Recital Hall including the Modigliani Quartet and the Jerusalem Quartet, but also a new piano trio featuring cellist Harriet Krijgh. Perhaps the Netherland’s most sought-after baritone Thomas Oliemans is given carte blanche as our Spotlight Artist. For the first time Asko|Schönberg will perform The Living Mountain ‒ postponed due to the pandemic ‒ a commissioned work by the 2019/20 season’s Composer-in-Residence, Thomas Larcher. Other postponed concerts that can be seen include the Beethoven Sonatas played by Nicolas Altstaedt and Alexander Lonquich, a song recital by Georg Nigl, and performances by violinists Isabelle Faust and Rachel Podger. For our young audiences there is Kindergarten Sinfonietta, Be Mozart and the St. Nicholas holiday concert. Our very youngest guests are also welcome at this year's Baby Concerts in the Spiegelzaal.

The Sunday Morning Concert

The Sunday Morning Concert In collaboration with the Dutch radio and television broadcaster AVROTROS is one of the most popular series of the Royal Concertgebouw and NPO Radio 4. Also last season a live concert ‒ with or without an audience present ‒ was broadcast every Sunday from our concert venue. The new season kicks off on 5 September with the Residentie Orkest, its new chief conductor Anja Bihlmaier and soloist Noa Wildschut. Other soloists this fall include pianists Thomas Beijer and Hannes Minnaar and organist Leo van Doeselaar. This fall Het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest will play works by Dutch composers including Wagenaar and Diepenbrock and will perform Prokofiev's historical Alexander Njevsky Cantata together with the Groot Omroepkoor (Netherlands Radio Choir). Performances by string ensembles including Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Camerata RCO are also planned.

Besides the Concertgebouw’s In-house programming, the fall scheduling of the Concertgebouworkest, the NTR Saturday Matinee – also broadcast on NPO Radio 4 – and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra will all be announced today.
